Olly Gibbs—Amazing Portfolio Website!

This site is so fun to look through. I love the layout, textured background, using an arm and hand with pointed finger as a recurring motif (including the icon that spins while you are waiting for something to load), ease of use, and lots of little animated details that show his attention to detail. It's very playful yet professional and organized. Very appealing and memorable!

This is the blurb about his site on Creative Bloq:

"Olly is a London based, multi-disciplined designer and illustrator who has already worked with the likes of Warner Bros, Muse, and The Salvation Army. It's the attention to detail within his portfolio that really makes it stand out.

The sense of fun immediately showcases Olly's personality, whilst the typography and lay-out makes it work aesthetically. We especially love the 'About' section."

I couldn't agree more! Very inspiring.

Jessica Hische Website. Beautiful!

My "mentor" for my GDS222 class is Jessica Hische. I have been inspired by her since my first semester in the program and was introduced to her amazing work in my typography I class. I think her lettering and other designs are absolutely beautiful and elegant, yet some of it is very playful and cute, but not too cutesy. She's not usually edgy, but she occasionally does produce work that is surprising. I truly appreciate the beauty and precision of everything she creates. I would love to be able to do the kinds of things she does!

I am posting her portfolio website, which is actually much more than that. It's designed so well, it's very easy to navigate, and it just looks beautiful and very cool. It's so "her!"

Links to her website and to her Daily Drop Cap website.

TUNG—Another great WEBPICK

This is a really super-clean and somewhat unusual portfolio website that I found on Commarts.com. It was a Webpick of the Day on February 5, just a couple of days ago. It's for a new Toronto-based design agency called Tung—which specializes in graphic design and art directions—founded by Emily Tu and Edmond Ng (That's where the name comes from).

Tu and Ng write, "Our practice developed out of a shared desire to create honest, intelligent and beautifully crafted work. We take a grounded and considered approach to design. Our process is decidedly personal – we collaborate with our clients to create thoughtful and compelling responses that reflect their needs and values. Over the last few years, we have created award-winning identities, packaging, publications, printed material, and websites for a wide range of clients – both large and small – in the public, private and cultural sectors."

Click here to visit the site.

The landing page, as you will see, is pretty unique and clever! What I really like about this site, however, is that it is SO minimalistic! The work they do is featured in quite large boxes which have multiple views, like mini slide shows. The type couldn't be plainer. And, there aren't even any icons for the social medias, just the lower-case abbreviations! Love it. No icons, just plain text for everything. I love the fact that the work, the most important thing, is what the site focuses on, and in a big way. The site is great, AND, I'm really liking the work they do. Please go to their website and check it out, if only for seeing the landing page, which is pretty cool (nothing too special, just kind of witty).

Some of you know this designer...

"I'm an interactive designer, storyteller, and community builder living in Brooklyn, NY. I care about the humans who use what I design, and strive to make work that matters." - Maya Bruck

If you don't know Maya either from having her as your Typography I teacher at Parkland or from CUDO or from somewhere else, I can tell you that she is one of the most dedicated, passionate, and creative designers I've had the pleasure to know. She co-founded CUDO, she worked as lead designer at PIXO and also at WOLFRAM, and she simply loves life, learning, people, and helping others be the best they can be and passionate about what they do.

I only recently looked at her professional portfolio website, and I was really impressed with it, not that I expected anything less. I like her logo a lot, and all it is is a black circle with her handwritten name in white in the middle. The site is designed beautifully and navigates perfectly. I also love the personal touches she adds with the copy she wrote that heads each section and the whimsical photo of her with a big smile on her face. Please go to the site and have a look around. You may or may not be inspired by it, but I recommend it as a clean, beautifully designed, simple portfolio website that definitely has Maya's fingerprints all over it!
